T-Mobile and other major U.S. telecom providers, including AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen Technologies, were targeted in a large-scale cyber-espionage attack by Salt Typhoon, a Chinese state-sponsored hacking group. The breach also extended to international telecom firms.
Hackers accessed sensitive systems used for law enforcement surveillance, compromising call records, unencrypted messages, and audio communications. Salt Typhoon exploited weaknesses in telecom infrastructure, such as vulnerabilities in Cisco Systems routers, to infiltrate these systems.
The attack, which lasted at least eight months, also targeted U.S. government officials involved in national security. While T-Mobile said no significant impact on its systems or customer data has been identified, experts warn that the full extent of the breach may not yet be known.
