What happened:

Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (BNPD) has allowed Meta to use personal data from Brazilian users for AI training, with certain restrictions.

Meta is now required to inform users in Brazil about how their data will be used for AI training on platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

Starting from 10 September, users will receive notifications via email and within the apps, giving them the option to opt out.

Previously, in July, the ANPD had suspended Meta’s privacy policy due to concerns over the use of personal data for AI training. However, the suspension was now lifted after Meta agreed to introduce transparency measures and provide clear disclosures to users.

Why it matters:

Meta’s new rules give users more control by allowing them to opt out, but it’s concerning that such basic transparency measures were only introduced after legal pressure, highlighting the need for companies to offer these protections by default.
