What happened
X (formerly Twitter) is updating its Privacy Policy to allow third-party companies to use users’ posts to train AI models.
Unless users actively opt out, their posts could be used by these external companies to improve their AI systems, similar to how Elon Musk has already used X data to train his chatbot, Grok.
This new data-sharing policy is set to take effect on November 15, and aims to generate revenue for X, as the platform continues to seek new income streams after losing advertisers.
The updated policy also changes how long X retains user data. Previously, the company stored information for a maximum of 18 months. Now, X states it will retain different types of data for varying periods, based on factors like legal or security needs.
Additionally, X is introducing new rules that will fine organizations $15,000 if they scrape more than 1 million posts in a 24-hour period.
